Criticality accident = unintentional nuclear reaction
Nuclear fission = nucleus of an atom breaking into smaller parts releasing energy
Nuclear chain reaction = more nuclear fissions in nearby atoms; the chain reaction keeps going and will only stop on its own
Nuclear radiation = highly reactive radiation can cause extensive damage to genetic materials which cannot be repaired by the body’s built-in DNA damage repair mechanisms; without proper instructions, cells no longer function normally – some will replicate uncontrollably resulting in the tumors, others cannot make the necessary proteins for various biological processes leading to sicknesses and birth defects in newborn.
