Severe Weather in China

Eastern Coastline: The full force of tropical storm Meari, still gaining strength is likely to soon become a typhoon. The storm is expected to head northward and hit Shanghai. The city has made preparations to ease concerns heightened by a torrential rain that drenched Beijing and paralyzed parts of the capital’s transport system on Thursday. The storm is also expected to unleash heavy rains in cities further north.

Central and Southern regions: More than 500,000 residents have been forced to evacuate as continued torrential rain has caused some of the worst flooding seen on the region in over 50 years. The flooding has left 105 people dead and 65 missing.  In the southwest, 5,000 passengers on four trains were stranded after landslides buried parts of a railway line. The regions remain on high flood alert after record rain. (CBS News)

Northwest regions: A prolonged drought has disrupted drinking water supplies to a total of 3.65 million people and 3.47 million head of livestock. In addition, the drought also has disrupted water supplies to more than 1 million head of livestock and about 1.3 million hectares of farmland. Rainfall in most parts of Gansu had dropped 50 to 80 percent from previous years since the drought began in March. (SOTT)
