(Oct 16) Two more sinkholes were found at two more school district sites, pushing the number to seven caverns at four county locations after last week’s flooding rain drenched Ocala, Florida. Read more HERE.  In a nearby sinkhole caused by the same storm a parked SUV fell into another sinkhole.


(Oct 14) Surface eruptions of steam and vapor continue near site of fatal accident southwest of Taft, California. On June 21, a Chevron employee was walking with other employees when a sinkhole suddenly opened up and he fell in to the hot, toxic mix of water, oil and other products.

(Oct 6) The rain from two tropical storms caused a giant sinkhole to open up at the base of the only road that leads to residents of Ross Township in Pennsylvania, which are at the top of a hill.The sinkhole is about 15 feet deep and looks like a massive crater. Read more HERE.


(Oct 5) Authorities in Johannesburg, South Africa have warned of an increasing risk of sinkholes opening up around Johannesburg, which has cost 38 lives in the last 50 years. At least 2,600 sinkholes have been recorded. Read more HERE.

(Oct 1) A sinkhole opens up in front of the Zimmerman, Lieberman & Tamulonis Law Offices at 111 E. Market St. in Pottsville, Pennsylvania collapsed. Read more HERE.

Updates:

(Oct 19) Authorities decided more geological inspections were needed on the bluff-top San Pedro land that is continuing to slide toward the ocean. A developing sinkhole and landslide on the coastal bluff, that also is adjacent to the White Point Nature Preserve, was confirmed a month ago, prompting the closure of a section of Paseo del Mar to vehicles. The area since also has been closed to pedestrians and bicycles. The cause of the sinkhole is under investigation. Read more HERE.

(Sept 30) A well-known stretch of San Pedro, California, along the Pacific that is prone to land movement may be in danger of a landslide. Using tape measures and instruments, surveyors determined that the hole beneath where the road buckled was 2 feet long and 3 feet wide. The hole appeared to be expanding. The city has given the go-ahead to plug sewer lines and move power poles, preparing for the worst. Source

(Oct 19) Drilling crews in Boston, Massachusetts are searching for clues near a Big Dig tunnel. Contractors are looking at the frozen soil around the I-90 tunnel to investigate a possible sinkhole. (Aug 11) A large sinkhole opens up right beneath the I-90 connector tunnel near Logan Airport. Transportation officials say the hole does not pose any immediate danger to drivers because it’s nine feet beneath the surface.
