The spread of an odd new flu virus that has been jumping from pigs to people in parts of the United States has the World Health Organization gearing up its response planning. The WHO’s desire to be prepared without raising alarm is a legacy of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. The WHO was heavily criticized for declaring a pandemic when the outbreak turned out to be milder than feared. Yet in some respects, the parallels are striking. A new swine-origin flu virus is causing sporadic infections in parts of the United States. Since it was first spotted in July, about a dozen cases have been confirmed in Maine, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Iowa. It is an influenza A virus of the H3N2 subtype, a distant cousin of H3N2 viruses that circulate in humans. (Source)
Update: (Dec 9) U.S. sees two more cases of new swine flu virus
In the recent movie “Contagion,” fictional health experts scramble to get ahead of a flu-like pandemic as a drug-resistant virus quickly spreads, killing millions of people within days after they contract the illness. Although the film isn’t based entirely on reality, it’s not exactly science fiction, either. (Source) There were three pandemic flu outbreaks in the 20th century — in 1918, 1957 and 1968 — known respectively as Spanish, Asian, and Hong Kong influenza. An estimated 50 million people died in the first outbreak, about 2 million died in the second and between 1 million and 3 million died in the third. (Source)
While the threat of a pandemic is looming, new surveillance data in Europe show a steep rise in the percentage of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia, a drug-resistant issue seen as a growing threat in the United States as well. (Source) Antibiotic resistance among pathogens has been reported for years now and it is worsening as indicated by the frequent news reports.
As compared with seasonal flu, infection with the pandemic strain of flu was associated with more extensive damage to the epithelium that requires more extensive tissue repair. Back in 2009, autopsies of 34 of the victims of the H1N1 influenza virus revealed that about half showed signs of bacterial co-infection in their lungs. This was a telling sign that the two pathogens are playing off one another, but until now little was known about the biological interactions between them or why influenza was so lethal when accompanied by pneumonia. What about biological threats? A biological attack is the deliberate release of germs or other biological substances that can make you sick. Many agents must be inhaled, enter through a cut in the skin or be eaten in order to cause sickness or death. Is it possible that ethnic-specific bio-weapons, called the “Patriotic Germ”, have already been developed?
